Tour Outsider: Legends Reno-Tahoe Open

This week the US PGA Tour is going in two different directions. This post is dedicated to the tournament in Reno: Legends Reno-Tahoe Open. For the other tournament that is being played this week, see the picks for the Bridgestone Invitational.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Tim Herron 4.45
2 S Joe Ogilvie 6.40
3 S Bob Estes 8.85
4 S John Merrick 10.30
5 S Scott McCarron 11.35
6 S Patrick Sheehan 12.10
7 S Michael Allen 12.20
8 S Brian Davis 13.65
9 S Charles Warren 13.95
10 S Jeffrey Overton 17.75
11 S Alexander Cejka 18.00
12 S Kevin Na 18.60
13 S Chris Riley 18.75
14 S Nicholas Thompson 19.15
15 S Carlos Franco 21.35

I will go with the top 3 in the CLi rankings. Then I will skip over Merrick and pick McCarron. McCarron plays well near his home town: Reno, NV. Then for my 5th pick I will go all the way down the 12th player in the rankings: Kevin Na.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Legend Reno-Tahoe Open are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Tim Herron 4.45
2 S Joe Ogilvie 6.40
3 S Bob Estes 8.85
4 S Scott McCarron 11.35
5 S Kevin Na 18.60

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have no players in common in this tournament.

Tour Outsider: Bridgestone Invitational

This week the US PGA Tour is going in two different directions. One is to Ohio to play one of the World Golf Championship events: Bridgestone Invitational. Then the other tournament that is being played this week on the US PGA Tour is on the west side of the United States at Legends Reno-Tahoe Open. This post is dedicated to the Bridgestone Invitational. I will submit the post for the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open later today.

[ I have now finished the move across country from Colorado to Kentucky. So hopefully I will get back on schedule with my weekly posts on Tour Outsider going forward. ]

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Jim Furyk 6.40
2 S Kenny Perry 9.15
3 S Stewart Cink 14.40
4 S Sergio Garcia 15.25
5 S Robert Allenby 15.50
6 S Rod Pampling 18.75
7 S Chris DiMarco 18.80
8 S Lucas Glover 20.55
9 S Hunter Mahan 21.85
10 S Justin Leonard 22.55
11 S Ian Poulter 22.75
12 S Vijay Singh 24.00
13 S David Toms 24.20
14 S Padraig Harrington 24.35
15 S Peter Lonard 24.55

The past two weeks for me have been tough in terms of my picks. I don't know if it is because I have not had much time to think about them since I have been in the process of a move and living out a moving truck. Or if it is because I just was not good with my picks. In any event, hopefully this week will turn out better.

The top 5 picks in the Golf CLi rankings look good. I wanted to stray from them to see if I could look down the list. I was thinking about looking at Pampling, Leonard, Poulter and/or Singh. However, I can't see which of the top 5 I could take out, as they all look really good to me. The only one that I might be hestitant about is Garcia as he has not placed higher than 13th in this event at Firestone. However, that said, he has not placed outside of the top 30 in the last five years and he is playing well leading up to this event. So I am going to stick with all of the top 5 in the CLi rankings.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Bridgestone Invitational are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Jim Furyk 6.40
2 S Kenny Perry 9.15
3 S Stewart Cink 14.40
4 S Sergio Garcia 15.25
5 S Robert Allenby 15.50

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 3 players in common in this tournament: Cink, Furyk and Perry.

Tour Outsider: RBC Canadian Open

This week the US PGA Tour heads north across the border to Canada to play the RBC Canadian Open

[ I wish I was heading north of the border to play in a golf tournament. Rather, my family and I are still living out of a moving truck at the moment. It has been over a week that we have been in the process of moving across country from Colorado to Kentucky. Hopefully we will be settled into a house in Louisville (KY), and out of the moving truck, come the end of the weekend. ]

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

After last week's tough showing (3 of my picks missed the cut at the British Open), I am going to let the CLi rankings do the talking. So I am going to go with the top five players in the CLi rankings this week.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the RBC Canadian Open are:

Tour Ousider: British Open

This week the world of golf is focusing it's attention on Royal Birkdale (UK) as the 3rd major of the year will be contested. Players are going after the claret jug that is rewarded to the winner of this week's British Open

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Vijay Singh 9.70
2 S Hunter Mahan 12.50
3 S Stewart Cink 13.70
4 S Phil Mickelson 17.60
5 S Sergio Garcia 18.10
6 S Geoff Ogilvy 18.30
7 S Lee Westwood 18.70
8 S Miguel Angel Jimenez 18.90
9 S Rod Pampling 20.80
10 S Graeme McDowell 24.80
11 S Justin Leonard 27.40
12 S Robert Karlsson 30.00
13 S Soren Hansen 32.90
14 S Jim Furyk 33.40
15 S Adam Scott 34.00

This week I am going to go with Singh as my first pick. His CLi figure is less than 10, which is a good sign, especially in a major.

Then I am going to skip over Mahan, as he has limited playing experience in the British Open. He has been playing well of late, but I just don't think he will fair well at Royal Birkdale because he will have jumpy jitters.

I will pick the next 3 in Cink, Mickelson and Garcia. Cink is solid in the British. Mickelson is the top ranked player in the field. Garcia played well last year in the British and wants a major after having won the Players Championship earlier in the year.

For my final pick, I want a European player. Westwood is looking good, however, I see one that I like even better down the list. It is another Spainard: Jimenez. If Jimenez keeps his cool when he hits a dire shot and doesn't have any big numbers on his scorecard, he should fair rather well this week.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the British Open are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Vijay Singh 9.70
2 S Stewart Cink 13.70
3 S Phil Mickelson 17.60
4 S Sergio Garcia 18.10
5 S Miguel Angel Jimenez 18.90

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 2 players in common in this tournament: Mickelson and Garcia.

Tour Outsider: John Deere Classic Review

It is now time to review the picks for the John Deere Classic to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

4 S D.J. Trahan 12.35 MC MC 112 67 $0
5 S Heath Slocum 13.05 41 66 44 46 $14,718

Am going to be brief here as I am packing today and moving cross country. The results were good and bad this week. The up side was that I did have a winner in Perry. However, most people knew that he was going to play well this week. So that was not much of a surprise. The down side was that two players missed the cut. It is never too good to have players in one's pick list miss the cut.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider: AT&T National Review

It is now time to review the picks for the AT&T National to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings

1 S Nick O'Hern 16.95 3 3 5 35 $256,500
2 S Robert Allenby 17.40 3 9 14 13 $256,500

4 S Anthony Kim 24.35 1 6 3 6 $1,080,000
5 S Tom Pernice Jr 24.40 9 1 1 13 $162,000

This week was one of my better weeks. For one, had a winner in Kim. Also had 3 players place in the top 3. Then had all 5 players place 12th or better, which meant that all 5 players made the cut. The average rank for my 5 picks was 5.6. That is a very low average rank for 5 players. So to say the least, I am happy this week with how my team of players played

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider: AT&T National

This week the US PGA Tour visits the D.C. area for the AT&T National, which is hosted by Tiger Woods. Even though Tiger won't be playing because he is out for the season after his knee surgery, he will be watching the tournament on TV....from the comforts of his couch.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Ben Crane 8.80
2 S Nick O'Hern 16.95
3 S Robert Allenby 17.40
4 S Hunter Mahan 17.40
5 S Rocco Mediate 18.40
6 S Alexander Cejka 19.60
7 S Rod Pampling 19.75
8 S Paul Goydos 20.50
9 S Tim Herron 21.85
10 S Anthony Kim 24.35
11 S Tom Pernice Jr 24.40
12 S Stuart Appleby 24.50
13 S Steve Elkington 24.70
14 S Jeff Quinney 24.70
15 S Michael Allen 25.05

After a week off (because of travels), I am thinking about picks again.

This week, I will going to do something I normal do not do, and that is to pass over someone that has a CLi less than 10. Ben Crane has a CLi of 8.80 and he plays well on this course. However, I don't want to risk him pulling out at the last minute (i.e. a WD).

So I am going to pass over Crane and then pick the next 3 players (O'Hern, Allenby and Mahan). Then I will drop down the list a little and pick Kim and Pernice. I can see Kim playing well this week because he wants to impress Tiger ...as this is Tiger's hosted tournament. And then for Pernice, even though he did miss the cut at the Buick last week, has been playing well the last couple of months.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the AT&T National are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Nick O'Hern 16.95
2 S Robert Allenby 17.40
3 S Hunter Mahan 17.40
4 S Anthony Kim 24.35
5 S Tom Pernice Jr 24.40

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 2 players in common in this tournament: Mahan and Allenby.
