Tour Outsider: Shell Houston Open

This week the US PGA Tour moves to the big state of Texas to play the Shell Houston Open.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Adam Scott 5.45
2 S Geoff Ogilvy 10.65
3 S K.J. Choi 13.45
4 S Phil Mickelson 14.50
5 S Padraig Harrington 15.25
6 S Hunter Mahan 15.95
7 S Steve Stricker 16.05
8 S Stuart Appleby 16.70
9 S Bo Van Pelt 20.45
10 S Tommy Armour III 20.60
11 S Anthony Kim 27.65
12 S Dudley Hart 28.00
13 S Marco Dawson 30.15
14 S John Mallinger 33.20
15 S Angel Cabrera 34.75

I am going to go with Adam Scott, then will skip over Geoff Ogilvy as I think he is focused more on the Masters than this tournament. Then will go with the Houston area transplant from South Korea, K.J. Choi --- as he likes playing in front of his adopted home town.

I will go with the next two players after that, which are Mickelson and Harrington. Mickelson historically plays well in the tournament before The Masters. In the past the tournament before The Masters was the Bellsouth Classic in Atlanta. So hoping to see him do well in Houston for the same reason. Harrington is playgin steadily at the moment and look to see him place well this week.

I will skip over Mahan to pick Stricker as my last pick. After missing the cut in New Orleans last week, I think Stricker will show some fire this week to play well before heading off to The Masters.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Shell Houston Open are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Adam Scott 5.45
2 S K.J. Choi 13.45
3 S Phil Mickelson 14.50
4 S Padraig Harrington 15.25
5 S Steve Stricker 16.05

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 2 players in common in this tournament: Choi and Scott.

Tour Outsider: Zurich Classic Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 S Padraig Harrington 8.80 4 8 25 33 $256,267
2 S Mark Calcavecchia 10.05 33 55 32 33 $30,724

4 S Stewart Cink 14.05 DQ 62 63 73 $0
5 S Woody Austin 15.90 4 2 17 9 $256,267

This week was pretty good. If you look at all 5 of my picks, I had two in the top 4. The only bleminsh was the disqualification of Cink after the 3 round.

Since Shedloski only made 4 picks last week, I have to knock off Austin and go with the top 4 (per my post earlier this week).

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $300,631 $13,640 TO

The Total Earnings category was won by the Tour Outsider.

The Tour Outsider won the Avg Rank category.

The Made Cut category was won by the Tour Outsider.

This tournament was won by the Tour Outsider.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider year to date is, 10 wins to the Tour Outsider, 3 wins to the Tour Insider, and 2 draws.

Tour Outsider: Zurich Classic

This week the US PGA Tour is in cajun country traveling to New Orleans to play the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Padraig Harrington 8.80
2 S Mark Calcavecchia 10.05
3 S Retief Goosen 11.10
4 S Stewart Cink 14.05
5 S Woody Austin 15.90
6 S Steve Stricker 16.45
7 S Anthony Kim 16.70
8 S John Mallinger 18.15
9 S John Senden 20.70
10 S John Merrick 21.60
11 S Bo Van Pelt 25.55
12 S Bubba Watson 29.45
13 S Briny Baird 30.45
14 S Alexander Cejka 31.00
15 S Carl Pettersson 31.25

I like the top 5 in the Cli rankings. They look good, as do several outside the top 5 (i.e. Stricker and Kim). So it should be a good tournament.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Zurich Classic in New Orleans are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Padraig Harrington 8.80
2 S Mark Calcavecchia 10.05
3 S Retief Goosen 11.10
4 S Stewart Cink 14.05
5 S Woody Austin 15.90

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 1 player in common in this tournament: Goosen.

Since Shedloski only made 4 picks this week, I will take out my 5th player, Woody Austin, to make it 4-on-4.

[ Note: I have been late in posting this week as I have been traveling. It has bee difficult for me to get Internet access and time as I have been in meetings or on airplaness for the earlier part of this week. Below is the posting regarding this week's tournament: Zurich Classic of New Orleans. ]

Tour Outsider: CA Championship Review

It is now time to review the picks for the CA Championship to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

1 S Tiger Woods 1.50 5 7 2 4 $285,000
2 S Vijay Singh 9.20 2 2 20 56 $530,000

5 S Luke Donald 17.60 20 17 10 9 $75,000

Had some nice picks this week with Singh and Woods as they both placed in the top 5. And even though the tournament was a selective field, it was nice to see that my highest pick finished 20th. That should help me this week.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $1,071,167 $2,307,167 TI

The Total Earnings category was won by the Tour Insider. Shedloski just kicked butt this week in earnings. It helped that he had players place 1st and 2nd.

The Tour Outsider won the Avg Rank category.

The Made Cut category was a draw.

This tournament was a draw.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider year to date is, 9 wins to the Tour Outsider, 3 wins to the Tour Insider, and 2 draws.

Tour Outsider: Puerto Rico Open Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Puerto Rico Open to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 S Matt Kuchar 2.75 MC MC 97 100 $0
2 S Brian Gay 4.25 54 50 14 15 $7,910

4 S John Merrick 5.75 13 14 10 9 $70,000
5 S Esteban Toledo 10.00 54 56 69 15 $7,910

No top tens, and 2 missed cuts this week. Not what I wanted to see.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $85,820 $62,773 TO
Avg Rank 64.8 85.2 TO
Made Cut 3 2 TO
Outcome -- -- TO

The Total Earnings category was won by the Tour Outsider...but just barely.

The Tour Outsider won the Avg Rank category.

The Made Cut category was won by the Tour Outsider.

This tournament was won by the Tour Outsider.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider year to date is, 9 wins to the Tour Outsider, 3 wins to the Tour Insider, and 1 draw.

This win was mainly because Shedloski picked two players that withdrew before the tournament started. Marino and Duke both withdrew before the first round. If Shedloski had made picks of players that played and didn't withdraw, he would have easily won.

The CLi top 15 looked like this (see below).

Tour Outsider: Puerto Rico Open

As mentioned in my previous post, this week the US PGA Tour moves to the southern tip of Florida and to Puerto Rico to play two tournaments. The first tournament this week for picks was the Puerto Rico Open. This posting is for the second tournament, which is the inaugural Puerto Rico Open.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 S Matt Kuchar 2.75
2 S Brian Gay 4.25
3 S Alexander Cejka 5.75
4 S John Merrick 5.75
5 S Esteban Toledo 10.00
6 S Dudley Hart 10.25
7 S Paul Stankowski 10.25
8 S Joe Durant 11.75
9 S Tom Lehman 15.00
10 S Roland Thatcher 15.25
11 S Patrick Sheehan 18.50
12 S Tim Petrovic 24.75
13 S Craig Kanada 26.00
14 S Michael Sim 27.25
15 S Chris Riley 30.50

I will keep it simple this week and go with all of the top 5 players in the CLi rankings. They all have CLi rankings of 10 or below.

It should be noted, since this tournament is being played for the first time this year (inaugural), that the CLi calculation is based solely on the results of the players leading up to this tournament. There is no historical results from this specific tournament to include in the CLi calculation. So that means the ranking lists which players are playing the best leading up to this tournament. Let's hope they continue to play well this week in this new tournament.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Puerto Rico Open are:

Rank Player CLi
1 S Matt Kuchar 2.75
2 S Brian Gay 4.25
3 S Alexander Cejka 5.75
4 S John Merrick 5.75
5 S Esteban Toledo 10.00

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 1 player in common in this tournament: Kuchar.

It is interesting that Shedloski picked two players that have since withdrawn from the tournament: Marino and Duke. So he is already down two players before the tournament has started.

[ Note: I would have written and posted this posting for the Puerto Rico Open last night. However, I fell asleep after a long day. I went to pick up my sister from the airport yesterday and the car decided to not start once at the airport. The car decided to wait for 2 hours before starting again. It does that every 4-5 months and the mechanics can't figure it out. When ever I take it in for them to look at it, the car starts just fine. In any event, it made for a long day at the airport just waiting around. Thus, I was delayed in posting until this morning (Tuesday). ]

12 Niclas Fasth 22.70
13 Geoff Ogilvy 24.40
14 Craig Parry 24.40
15 Sean O'Hair 25.70

I will go with the top 3 players in the CLi rankings this week, skip over the next two, and then pick the next two players.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the CA Championsip are:

Tour Outsider: Arnold Palmer Invitational Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Arnold Palmer Invitational to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 Vijay Singh 4.15 3 1 1 3 $301,600
2 Tiger Woods 9.20 1 1 20 34 $1,044,000

4 Chad Campbell 27.40 21 17 10 12 $51,620
5 Scott Verplank 33.45 MC MC 86 67 $0

This week, it was an easy time to pick Singh and Woods. The results definitely showed that, as Woods won and Singh placed 3rd.

As for the 3 other players in my 5 picks, 2 of them missed the cut (Donald and Verplank). Campbell was the bright star in this group of 3 as he placed 21st.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider Tour Insider Winner

Tour Outsider: Arnold Palmer Invitational

This week the US PGA Tour continues its Florida swing, moving to the center of Florida to play the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando. Played at Bay Hill, this tournament is Arnie's tournament as well as his personal course, true and true.

Let's look at the Golf CLi and see who the top 15 players are for the tournament ranked by the CLi figure.

Rank Player CLi
1 Vijay Singh 4.15
2 Tiger Woods 9.20
3 Luke Donald 11.45
4 Stuart Appleby 14.10
5 Phil Mickelson 19.15

7 Ben Crane 27.05
8 Chad Campbell 27.40
9 Kenny Perry 27.50
10 Brian Gay 28.35

12 Scott Verplank 33.45
13 Boo Weekley 33.85
14 Rod Pampling 37.20
15 Sergio Garcia 38.25

Let's see if I can right the ship after the bad week at the PODS Championship (had 4 out of 5 players miss the cut).

I will go with the top 3 players in the CLi, two of them have CLis below 10 and Donald's is not far above 10 (11.45). Then I will go outside of the top 5 to pick Campbell and Verplank.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the Arnold Palmer Invitational are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Vijay Singh 4.15
2 Tiger Woods 9.20
3 Luke Donald 11.45
4 Chad Campbell 27.40
5 Scott Verplank 33.45

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 3 players in common in this tournament: Woods, Singh and Donald.

It is a good thing that I went outside the top 5 in the CLi, or Shedloski and I would have had all 5 picks the same this week as Shedloski's picks are also the top 5 CLi rankings.

This week was not good and provided a first for me since I have been comparing my picks to the Tour Insider. 4 of the 5 players I picked missed the cut. Ouch! I am going to go with the top 4 players in the CLi rankings. I just hope that Gay does not pull out of this one. He plays well here, so hopefully he has had a good rest during his week off and is ready to play this week in Tampa.

I am going to skip over Calcavecchia even though he played well last week in the Honda Classic. I just do not see him being able to pull 4 good rounds out of his bag this week. He can easily do well for 3 rounds, but I just see him being tired one round this week, which will cause him to have a bad round.

Then to round out my five players, I will pick Durant. He plays well in Florida and has been playing well leading up to this tournament.

So the Tour Outsider picks for the PODS Championship are:

Rank Player CLi
1 Ernie Els 5.55
2 J.B. Holmes 10.60
3 Robert Allenby 14.80
4 Brian Gay 18.55
5 Joe Durant 20.95

The Tour Insider's (Dave Shedloski) picks are:

We have 2 players in common in this tournament: Els and Gay.

Tour Outsider: Honda Classic Review

It is now time to review the picks for the Honda Classic to see how the results turned out.

Here are the results of the Tour Outsider (my) picks.

Rank Player CLi Rank Earnings
Rd4 Rd3 Rd2 Rd1 Actual
1 Boo Weekley 4.90 74 37 42 32 $10,505
2 Luke Donald 7.25 2 1 12 1 $594,000
3 Steve Marino 11.25 24 37 20 17 $44,550
4 Chad Campbell 16.05 20 26 54 32 $64,075
5 Robert Allenby 18.10 4 8 6 17 $227,333

This was another good week with two players in the top 5: Donald and Allenby. Donald had a chance to win coming into the last hole. He needed to make a birdie on the final hole to force a playoff with Ernie Els, who eventually won. Good for Els.

It was good that I didn't pick Brian Gay as he withdrew before the start of the tournament. Most probably it was because he was still enjoying his first US PGA Tour win from last week.

I removed Gay from my last to pick Allenby. That turned out to be a good decision as Allenby placed 4th.

Again, the nice thing this week is that I had all 5 players make the cut.

Here are the results of the Tour Insider (Dave Shedloski) picks.

Here is the comparison between the Tour Outsider and Tour Insider picks.

Tour Outsider Tour Insider Winner
Total Earnings $940,338 $175,023 TO
Avg Rank 24.8 53.8 TO
Made Cut 5 4 TO
Outcome -- -- TO

The Tour Outsider won the Total Earnings category.

The Tour Outsider won the Avg Rank category.

The Made Cut category was won by the Tour Outsider for the sweep of all three categories.

This tournament was won by the Tour Outsider.

The overall results between the Tour Outsider and the Tour Insider year to date is, 7 wins to the Tour Outsider, 2 wins to the Tour Insider, and 1 draw.
